The Sixth Annual Kidswrite Young Writers' Contest is now open!

The schools for eligible students in School District #83 and #22 have been contacted. Already future authors are preparing their entries.

Last year, the 2012 contest drew over 200 entries. Twenty-four talented writers received awards at the Shuswap Festival of Writers and presented their poems and stories. The new festival name this year is: ‘Word on the Lake’ a festival for readers and writers

Awards Day: Saturday, May 25, 3:45, at The Prestige Resort and Convention Centre in Salmon Arm Winners and your families, please be in the room by 3:30. Students will be advised before awards day and encouraged to read their winning entries, please bring your poem/story with you. No fees are charged for the contest or for the awards day, however parents and teachers would be inspired by the full weekend festival of presentations by accomplished authors. Further information is available on this site.

Two judges for each category carefully choose 3 entries on the basis of merit, originality and style. All decisions are final. Students are asked not to re-submit entries from previous years, and to keep a copy of their work. The names of all students who have entered will be posted at the festival, along with school names. Those who write are recognized. Each year judges give hours of their time carefully reading the entries, their work is crucial.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please follow the contest entry guidelines. A cover page for each entry is required, a sample page is shown. These guidelines have changed slightly from last year.

Mail entries to: Writing Contest, Box 1134, Salmon Arm, BC V1E 4P3

A thank-you to the parents and teachers who encourage these young writers. Though the mandate of the Shuswap Association of Writers is to support writers of all ages, the encouraging voice at home or at school helps to slip the entry into the mailbox on time.

So, sharpen your pencil, or dust off your keyboard, and start writing!
